Charity……… August 18, 2007

The other day I was returning from a function and a small incident changed a lot of perceptions……. It was a heavily raining day with abrupt traffic movement n irregular n less trains working, so for the returning journey we decided to go with a friend in their car to a certain distance and then take a rick home from that point. At one of the traffic junctions a small girl not more than 6 yrs old was selling jarbera flowers and my friends husdand was like,,,,,,,,’bag kiti lahan mulgi ahey kay honar???’ and he shelled out a 10 rs note to give it to her,it was raining outside and the person on the window seat was contemplating how to give her the note from the window fast ;my instant reaction “arre ek flower toh le,who bheek toh nahin mang rahi hai” but the signal cleared and we moved…….then we started wondering how many times she must have got wet and dried at the same very signal in a single day. What life has in store for her? Will she ever get an opportunity to prepare for a better future?

And then I ponder, what is happening to us, are we getting so indifferent to the plight of social injustice? have we just accepted this growing disparity as a part of the society……don’t know if one should consider ourselves fortunate that at her age we had absolutely no worries no tension just pure fun and enjoyment, undivided n dedicated attention of parents and full scope to equip ourselves for a better tomorrow or someone who just talks n writes about this issues but when it comes to doing something most of us are caught in our own circles and all we do is so called charity. How long can we fool ourself ,no doubt something is better than nothing but superficiality never lasts and things won’t change like this. For now all I can remember is “Charity is the just a cheap substitute for social injustice”…..hope I can do something more than just that.

It is a great observation and wish you power to do something more than charity. I don’t even remember when last time I did charity.

Recently I learn this small line in one of the company training. ” Such is the way of life.” I do not really whom to be blame for this. Even I di not know who can change this. I am sure most of us are baffled on this issue.

hi

hmm… really makes us think. On one thought we feel we shouldn’t entertain child labour so we don’t buy from them but most of the times we pitty their plight and feel like helping them. Another aspect is if the money really goes to them at all? A small gesture at helping them would be giving them something to eat rather than money. I guess that it the least of things we can do without any effort. And yes….if we want we could do much more than this….

hi ken

First and foremost ” THANX for all the motivation and encouragement.

Blaming anyone is not the issue, change is the criteria .I am sure that can be achieved by small individual and group gestures like MY FRIEND has mentioned. I am very positive that little efforts , a little goodness and a pinch of humnity will make some difference somewhere.

Thanx

Hello MY FRIEND

Thanx for the wonderful comment . I totally agree to the food concept and try to do that whenever possible.

Gets back the memories of SPG and Ice-cream………can never forget the expressions on the innocent faces. :)

Thanx

hey!

wanted to comment for a long time..but till rght now the timing was never rght..and btw its great to see you penning down your thoughts..

i agree its a good thought and all..but i always wonder why do these thoughts occur only whn we actually encounter these kids on the streets..and what happens in between these bouts of intense conversations about the our inability to do anything, the misfortune of the kids and apathy of the society.

i have no doubt that the intentions behind the thought are of absolute concern and need to help, but what stops you from actually logging into the internet, calling few people, finding out about organizations big or small and actually contributing maybe not money but your time.

and believe me there are many such opportunities. from the bigger ones like CRY to smaller ones..which i was especially amazed when i found out..like the mobile toy van which went around different construction sites and acted as the ‘day care’ for the kids of on site construction workers..or the guy who founded children’s toy foundation who build a toy library for underprivileged kids lying in the depressing pediatrics wards of government hospitals..there are so many different volunteering opportunities that might suit your availability and area of concern.

i know that we all have constraints of time, everyday work schedules and family issues..but if we really feel so passionately about the issue then all i want to say tht it is not just time for us to act..it is WAY BEYOND TIME..
